A Bug's Life

Joely and Tan found this gaffer in our back yard:

He was about an inch long - pretty impressive. Turns out he's a Dorcus Stag Beetle. How do I know this you ask??

The good folks at BugGuide.net told me. If you or your kiddies like bugs, this is the site for you. I emailed in the pic of our big beetle friend, and some bug dudes (or entomologists if you're keeping score) replied and identified it for me. Fun! How can you resist a site that is "All Abuzz About Bugs"??

Sadly, Mr. Dorcus was discovered in our driveway a few days later by a girl down the street and promptly squished. At least a contribution to the scientific knowledge base was made before his demise.
