Brrrrrrrrrr...

So, they definitely have seasons in Australia, particularly in the Southern half.

It's COLD here at night!!

"Winter" is officially upon us here in WA, and although many days are quite pleasant (today was 21 and sunny), the nights get down to as low as 4 (our lowest so far).

Now before all my hearty Canadian friends and family scoff, let me explain. The houses here have no central heat. The houses are also very poorly insulated, which means that once the sun goes down, it gets very cool - much cooler than most Canadian houses get in the winter. Case in point - one morning recently I went into Lucy's room, and we had forgotten to turn her heater on. The thermometer in her room was reading 14 degrees (just under 60 F)! Again, I know that sounds "warm", but think of what you set your thermostat to in Canadian winters! I'll bet even the most miserly of you set it to higher values than that!

So I have some news for Canadians - although we pride ourselves on dealing with the cold (and goodness knows we do when we step out the door), I have to give the nod to Aussies for stoically tolerating the cold indoors!

As evidence - check out the comment I got from an Aussie friend who grew up about 2 hours inland of Sydney, in response to my whining:

"Had to laugh when you said it was cold here in Oz! Hate to have seen what it would have been like if you had ended up in Bathurst or Canberra. They are not as cold as Canada, but they are way colder than here, and we didn't have central heating growing up, instead we used wood fires. You'd lay there in bed each morning dreading to be the first person up because it would be absolutely freezing (when you breathe it looks like you're smoking) and whoever got up first had to make the fire. I am enjoying not having frosts here."

YIKES!

Anyway, enough whining - I'm freezing, and I'm off to bury myself under the duvet and flannel sheets!!
